Physical therapy after a car Accident – Treating Foot Injuries

by | Dec 13, 2024 | Ankle Pain, Foot Pain, MVA Rehab, Rehabilitation

foot physical therapy after a car accident

Physical therapy after a car accident is most likely going to be a necessity. No matter how you feel afterwards, something might pop later on. In this case we are going to be looking at foot injuries and how to treat them after an accident. Car accidents cause a variety of injuries to the feet and surrounding muscles; and if you have ever injured your foot or your ankle, you would know how it impacts your mobility.

PRO Therapy specializes in treating these injuries and, wherever possible, helping patients regain functionality with their feet and ankles.

Common Foot and Ankle Injuries from Car Accidents

Fractures and broken bones are serious injuries that can occur in car accidents. The severity of a fracture can range from a simple crack in the bone to a complete break. Treatment for a fracture often involves immobilization, either with a cast or a brace, to allow the bone to heal properly.

Once the bone has healed though, your body will probably need physical rehabilitation. In the case of a broken foot or ankle, you would need to get help rebuilding the surrounding muscles in your lower leg. You would also need help retraining and stretching your ligaments, in order to help restore full mobility.

Achilles Tendonitis is Another Common Foot Injury

3d rendering of human achilles tendon

It occurs when the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, becomes inflamed. This condition is often caused by overuse, especially activities like running, jumping, or dancing.

When it comes to car accidents, you have to consider that reaction that forces you to press your legs out straight. Your entire body is jolted at the moment of impact and those tightly flexed tendons can get pulled in abnormal ways. Without getting that checked out, it could lead to inflammation in the tendons and ongoing pain in the foot.

Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis after a Car Accident

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes pain in the heel of the foot. The pain itself comes from inflammation of the plantar fascia – a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. This condition is often aggravated by activities that involve prolonged standing, walking, or running.

That means if you injured your foot during a motor vehicle accident, you’ll need to avoid standing and walking as much as possible. In most cases, the pain experienced can be enough to force you to come and see one of our physical therapists.

Ankle Sprains Require Physical Therapy after a Car Accident

Ankle sprains are another possible injury that can occur. Sprains are often caused by twisting, rolling, or severe compression on the ankle. When an ankle is sprained during a car accident, the ligaments can get stretched or even torn. This can lead to pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in the recovery process and we can treat ankle sprains here at our clinic. Our physical therapists use a variety of techniques to reduce pain, inflammation, and improve ankle functionality.

Remember to drive safely over the holiday season, and minimize the chance of a car accident. Enjoy the festivities!

Great place!

I had a great experience at PRO therapy. It’s a great mix of body work and exercise. It isn’t “a printout of your exercises and come back in two weeks” place. You do all the exercises in the gym with them each session so you know the correct form and how to do them on your own. I have really improved in my strength and my day to day pain has significantly reduced over my time there. My main PT was Dr. Kelvyn and he was great to work with. Very supportive and encouraging. He met me where I was at and didn’t make me feel bad if I couldn’t complete something. If I wanted to be seen but couldn’t get onto his schedule, I saw one of the other PTs and they were all equally great. It was seamless to work with someone else for the day. Jen and the other front desk staff were always very friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend getting your physical therapy done here.

I worked with Dr. Kelvyn here for over a year and a half on multiple lower body injuries (ankle, knee, hip, lower back). He is the best physical therapist I’ve ever worked with, and unfortunately I’ve had the misfortune of working with a lot of PTs in my lifetime. I appreciated that he really listened to what I was coming in and describing feeling to him each session, and then he tailored the exercises we did together and the exercises he prescribed to do at home based on what I reported at the beginning of our session. He also did a good job of adjusting my at home exercises to my needs and preferences. Can’t recommend Dr. Kelvyn or PRO Therapy enough!

Great recovery from neck and shoulder focus! Thank you for care!!

My experience with Grace was wonderful. I saw her for pelvic floor therapy and some general physical therapy and hip mobility. She listened very well to my concerns, was very educational and helped me understand why I was doing the exercises I was doing. I would highly recommend Grace and Pro Therapy.

Grace helped me strengthen my core to the point where my back feels so much better. She gave me excercises that I can do at home that don't require gym equipment.

Since my treatment, pain and mobility have greatly improved. Very appreciative of all the help.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%
