Hand & Wrist Pain
Our hands and wrists do a lot of work, which unfortunately means more opportunities to cause invisible injury and worsen existing pain. Hand and wrist pain, while very inconvenient, is very common.
With the use of our hands for work and play all day long it’s no wonder we tend to have pain. With wrist and hand pain comes reduced range of motion and difficulty doing tasks like holding objects, writing and texting – just think of how often you use your hands and wrists every day!
Hand and Wrist Pain Causes
Getting to the bottom of what’s causing your hand and wrist pain is key to creating the best treatment plan for you. Signs and symptoms can indicate if there’s an issue with your hand and wrist, from your wrist to fingertips such as:
- Redness
- Stiffness
- Weakness
- Numbness
- Swelling
- Tingling
Repetitive Motion
As one of the most common reasons that people develop pain in their hands and wrists, repetitive motion doing the same things, including staying in the same position for a long period can have terrible effects on the wrist. Think driving for too long or even typing on our computers and phones.
Physical Impact
Falling on your wrists or hitting your hands and wrists can cause injury and pain. Impacts can cause fractures, sprains, or strains. You don’t need to break a bone to feel the impact causing harm to nerves and tissues.
Ganglion Cysts
Benign tumors that grow on the wrists. They can often press on a nerve causing pain and a tingling sensation. Removal can be of benefit but in some cases these cysts do return.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel is a common wrist condition where a nerve is compressed as it enters the hand near the base of the palm.
Hand or Wrist Fractures
Wrist fractures, hand fractures and finger fractures happen when one of the more common bones to break around the wrist, the scaphoid (sometimes called the navicular). This is one of the first bones of the base of the hand (carpal bones) and sits on the end of one of the two forearm bones called the radius. Its location between the forearm and the hand combined with its narrow-waisted, peanut shape make it particularly vulnerable to breaking when the wrist is forcibly bent back. It is a common injury in sports (like football) but can be broken anytime a person falls onto an outstretched hand.
Trigger Finger
A very common condition that impacts the tendons that bend the fingers and thumb making it so you can’t straighten a finger or thumb properly.
Arthritis
Occurs after the wear and tear on your joints has broken down the cartilage and there is no more cushioning.
