Hip Pain
If you’re living with bad hips, they’re painful, they’re stiff or they ache – it’s very easy to think that it’s just something that comes with age, it’s a bit of wear and tear, or that it’s nothing, and it’ll go away on its own.
Unfortunately, that’s often not true – and continuing the same activities without treatment can unknowingly add stress to your hips, increasing your pain. You may be told that you need to consider surgery or an expensive hip replacement. While this is unavoidable in some cases, it doesn’t have to be your first move.
Hip Pain Causes
Getting to the bottom of what’s bothering your hip is key to creating the best treatment plan for you. In addition to pain, here are some other indications you might have an issue with your hip:
- Pain in the groin area (hip joint)
- Feferred pain to the thigh and knee
- Limping
- Stiffness
- Reduced range of motion
Here are the causes of some common hip issues:
Hip Fractures
A break in the upper portion of the femur where it meets the hip bone (pelvis). Hip injuries can occur in people of all ages ranging from athletes who participate in a lot of sports to those of older age due to weakness in muscles and more fragile bones.
Labral Tear
An injury to the tissue that holds the ball and socket parts of the hip together. Unfortunately this results in pain, reduced range of motion and what some describe as hip locking.
Pinched Nerve
This is commonly described as feeling like a dull ache or burning pain in the hip, thigh or groin and may extend down the leg.
Post-Partum Hip Pain
A common issue for new moms, happens because the muscles surrounding the pelvis get out of balance during pregnancy.

Hip Impingement
A common cause of hip and groin pain. It occurs when the bones of the hip joint don’t fit together properly, causing friction and abnormal wear and tear.
Hip Strain/Sprain
A hip sprain is an injury to the ligaments that support the hip, while a hip strain is an injury to the muscles and tendons that support the hip. Both injuries can occur when the hip is stretched or torn beyond its limit.
Labrum Tear
An injury to the cartilage tissue that lines the hip socket and holds the hip’s ball and socket together.
