Knee Pain
Knee problems are one of the most common orthopedic complaints for people of all ages. When you’re dealing with knee pain, it can be a frustrating and debilitating experience just trying to walk around the house, drive to the store, or spend time with family. This is true for both acute, sudden knee pain and chronic knee pain that builds over time.
Knee Pain Causes
Getting to the bottom of what’s bothering your knee is key to creating the best treatment plan for you. In addition to pain, other signs and symptoms can indicate if there’s an issue with the knee, like:
- Swelling and stiffness
- Redness and warmth to the touch
- Weakness or instability
- Popping or crunching noises
- Inability to fully straighten the knee
Here’s what might be throwing your knee off balance:
Dislocated Kneecap
The patella can slip out of place and drift to the outside of your knee.
Hip or Foot Pain
When your hip or foot hurts, you might find yourself unconsciously adjusting your walking style to relieve that pain, and your knee ends up taking the brunt of the strain.
Fractures
The bones of the knee can be broken during falls or accidents, and for people with osteoporosis, even by just stepping wrong.
Overuse
Repeat movements or extra strain on the knee from sports or lifestyle factors like work can cause chronic knee pain.
Meniscus Tears
The C-shaped cartilage in your knee can tear from sudden twists, wear and tear, or just with getting older.
Ligament Tears
ACL tears, MCL tears, and other ligament injuries can occur during sports, car accidents, or just by accident.

Dislocated Knee
When the entire knee joint dislocates and causes separation between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone).
IT Band Syndrome
This condition involves inflammation of the iliotibial band, a thick band of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin. ITBS can cause pain on the outside of the knee, especially during activities like running or cycling.
Post Surgery Rehab
Coming back from knee surgery is literally no walk in the park, whether you’ve had a knee replacement, or ligament or cartilage repairs.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome – “Runner’s Knee”
