5 Signs Your Pelvic Floor May Need PT

Life in NE Minneapolis keeps us active! From hitting the trails along the Mississippi to navigating busy careers and family life, women in our community are constantly on the go. You juggle a lot, and your body works hard to keep up. But sometimes, a crucial part of your bodyβ€”your pelvic floorβ€”might need a little extra attention, especially if you’re between the ages of 25-55, active, pregnant, or have recently welcomed a new baby.

At PRO Therapy in NE Minneapolis, we understand the unique demands on women’s bodies. We’re excited to offer a new service dedicated to empowering women through specialized physical therapy, focusing on pelvic health. Ignoring subtle signs from your body can lead to bigger issues down the road. So, how do you know if your pelvic floor might benefit from physical therapy?

Here are five signs to look out for:

1. Leaking When You Laugh, Sneeze, Cough, or Jump

Do you find yourself leaking a little urine when you laugh at a joke, sneeze unexpectedly, cough, or engage in high-impact activities like running or jumping? This is often dismissed as a normal part of being a woman, especially after childbirth, but it’s not! Urinary incontinence is a common sign of pelvic floor dysfunction, indicating weakness or improper coordination of these essential muscles.

2. Pelvic Pain or Pressure

Experiencing pain in your lower abdomen, groin, hips, or lower back? Or do you feel a sensation of heaviness or pressure in your pelvic region? This could be a sign that your pelvic floor muscles are too tight, weak, or unbalanced. Pelvic pain can manifest in many ways and can significantly impact your quality of life. Our specialized therapists can help identify the root cause of your discomfort.

3. Pain During Intercourse

If intimacy has become painful, it’s a strong indicator that your pelvic floor might need attention. This can range from superficial pain at the entrance to deeper discomfort. There are many potential causes, including muscle tension, scar tissue, or nerve irritation. Pelvic floor physical therapy can often provide significant relief and help you regain comfort and confidence.

Beyond just leaking, other issues like a frequent urge to urinate (even after just going), difficulty emptying your bladder or bowels completely, or even accidental bowel leakage are all signs that your pelvic floor isn’t functioning optimally. These symptoms can be disruptive and embarrassing, but they are often highly treatable with targeted physical therapy.

5. Feeling of “Something Falling Out” (Pelvic Organ Prolapse)

A sensation of heaviness, bulging, or “something falling out” in your vaginal area can be a sign of pelvic organ prolapse. This occurs when pelvic organs (like the bladder, uterus, or rectum) descend into the vagina. While it sounds alarming, it’s a common condition, especially for women who have had children, and pelvic floor physical therapy is often the first line of defense in managing symptoms and improving support.

You Don’t Have to Live With It!

If you recognize any of these signs, please know that you are not alone, and help is available right here in NE Minneapolis. Our dedicated women’s health physical therapists at PRO Therapy are experts in assessing and treating pelvic floor dysfunction. We’ll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs, helping you regain strength, control, and confidence so you can get back to living your active life to the fullest.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%

I found PRO Therapy shortly after tearing my ACL at the beginning of the year. From the Pre-Op PT, to now 7 months post op and 50+ appointments, I could not be happier with where Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Lily have gotten me back to. I highly recommend PRO to anyone looking for PT in the Twin Cities!

I self referred myself to PRO Therapy because of the 5 star rating and I'm so glad I did!

Dr. Kelvyn and Jen were so easy to work. Everyone I saw at the office was very nice too. I worked on my hips and shoulders this year and feel confident I can continue making progress post "graduation" because of the knowledge and exercises that Dr. Kelvyn shared with me!

Overall, I would highly recommend. Thank you PRO Therapy for a great experience πŸ™‚

I have struggled with back and hip pain for several years. ProTherapy is the first place that I found made consistent progress to healing. The combination of physical therapy and Stem Wave has made such a difference in my mobility and pain relief. The staff are so knowledgeable, kind, and put 100% of themselves into their work with patients. If you have been struggling to find relief from your pain, I would highly recommend trying ProTherapy
