Is Dry Needling Good for Arthritis?

by | Aug 17, 2023 | Treatment Techniques

Close up man touching palm and feeling a pain.

If you’re one of the millions of people worldwide affected by arthritis, you’re likely looking for a solution to end your pain and stiffness. One treatment option you may encounter in your research is dry needling. But what exactly is dry needling, and can it really help alleviate the discomfort caused by arthritis?

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is an increasingly popular treatment that continues to show great outcomes with patients suffering from a wide variety of symptoms. Dry needling is performed by utilizing a small, thin needle to penetrate the skin to improve the environment of the designated area for healing.

This process might sound very similar to acupuncture – which also uses needles as a treatment. However, acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese treatment and is a whole-body, energy-based approach. Dry needling, by contrast, is performed by physical therapists to treat a specific musculoskeletal condition or pain.

Dry Needling for Arthritis

Dry needling can be an effective treatment option for arthritis as part of a full physical therapy plan. Any muscle, ligament, tendon, joint, or scar tissue can be needled. Trigger points – hyperirritable spots located in skeletal muscle – often develop in muscles that cross arthritic joints. Dry needling increases blood flow and oxygen to the affected tissues as well as promotes release of our body’s self-made opioids. This helps increase range of motion, decrease muscle tone, and decrease pain. For that reason, dry needling can be used as an effective pain reliever for those with arthritis.

Since my treatment, pain and mobility have greatly improved. Very appreciative of all the help.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%

I found PRO Therapy shortly after tearing my ACL at the beginning of the year. From the Pre-Op PT, to now 7 months post op and 50+ appointments, I could not be happier with where Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Lily have gotten me back to. I highly recommend PRO to anyone looking for PT in the Twin Cities!

I self referred myself to PRO Therapy because of the 5 star rating and I'm so glad I did!

Dr. Kelvyn and Jen were so easy to work. Everyone I saw at the office was very nice too. I worked on my hips and shoulders this year and feel confident I can continue making progress post "graduation" because of the knowledge and exercises that Dr. Kelvyn shared with me!

Overall, I would highly recommend. Thank you PRO Therapy for a great experience 🙂
