Neck and Back Pain After a Fender Bender? Here’s What You Need to Know

A fender bender might seem like a minor inconvenience, but the physical aftermath can be anything but. The sudden jolt of a car accident, even at low speeds, can cause significant strain on your neck and back. You might feel fine in the moments immediately following the crash due to the rush of adrenaline, only to wake up the next day with pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

If you’ve been in a car accident and are now experiencing neck or back pain, it’s crucial to understand what’s happening to your body and what steps you can take to heal properly. Here at PRO Therapy in Coon Rapids, we specialize in helping people recover from these types of injuries.

The Hidden Impact of a Minor Collision

The most common car accident injuries we see are often related to the spine and surrounding soft tissues. Here are a few things that can happen, even in a “minor” accident:

  • Whiplash: This is one of the most frequent injuries, caused by the head and neck being forcefully and rapidly whipped back and forth. This motion can strain or tear the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your neck, leading to pain, stiffness, and headaches.
  • Herniated or Bulging Discs: The force of the impact can cause the jelly-like discs that cushion your vertebrae to shift or rupture. This can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing localized pain or radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into your arms, hands, legs, or feet.
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: Your muscles, tendons, and ligaments can be overstretched or torn, leading to inflammation, swelling, and decreased mobility in your neck and back.

The key thing to remember is that these injuries may not show up immediately. Delayed onset of pain is very common, which is why it’s so important to seek medical attention even if you feel okay at first. Ignoring the pain can lead to chronic issues down the road.

If you’re experiencing neck and back pain after a car accident, taking these steps can help you on the road to recovery:

  1. Seek Medical Attention Immediately: Get a professional medical evaluation as soon as possible. A doctor can rule out more serious injuries and provide a diagnosis. They may order diagnostic tests like X-rays or MRIs to get a clear picture of any underlying issues.
  2. Document Everything: Keep a record of all your symptoms, medical visits, and any expenses related to your injury. This documentation is crucial for insurance or legal claims.
  3. Consider Physical Therapy: Once you have a diagnosis, physical therapy is often the most effective way to address the root cause of your pain. A physical therapist can create a personalized treatment plan to help you heal.

I worked with Dr. Kelvyn here for over a year and a half on multiple lower body injuries (ankle, knee, hip, lower back). He is the best physical therapist I’ve ever worked with, and unfortunately I’ve had the misfortune of working with a lot of PTs in my lifetime. I appreciated that he really listened to what I was coming in and describing feeling to him each session, and then he tailored the exercises we did together and the exercises he prescribed to do at home based on what I reported at the beginning of our session. He also did a good job of adjusting my at home exercises to my needs and preferences. Can’t recommend Dr. Kelvyn or PRO Therapy enough!

My experience with Grace was wonderful. I saw her for pelvic floor therapy and some general physical therapy and hip mobility. She listened very well to my concerns, was very educational and helped me understand why I was doing the exercises I was doing. I would highly recommend Grace and Pro Therapy.

Grace helped me strengthen my core to the point where my back feels so much better. She gave me excercises that I can do at home that don't require gym equipment.

Since my treatment, pain and mobility have greatly improved. Very appreciative of all the help.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%

I found PRO Therapy shortly after tearing my ACL at the beginning of the year. From the Pre-Op PT, to now 7 months post op and 50+ appointments, I could not be happier with where Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Lily have gotten me back to. I highly recommend PRO to anyone looking for PT in the Twin Cities!
