Fix Plantar Fasciitis: Why New Shoes Aren’t the Answer

by | Aug 21, 2025 | Foot Pain

new pair of running shoes

That sharp, searing pain in your heel with your first steps in the morning? It’s a hallmark sign of plantar fasciitis, a common and often debilitating condition. If you’re one of the many suffering from this foot ailment, chances are you’ve already tried the most commonly suggested “fix”: a new pair of supportive shoes.

While a good pair of shoes can certainly provide some cushioning and support, especially during activities, it’s crucial to understand that new shoes alone are rarely the ultimate solution for plantar fasciitis. At PRO Therapy Physical Therapy, serving the NE Minneapolis and Coon Rapids communities, our Doctors of Physical Therapy see this scenario play out time and time again. Patients come in frustrated, having spent money on the latest footwear trends, only to find their heel pain persists.

Why Shoes Fall Short in Treating Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. It acts like a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot. Plantar fasciitis occurs when this tissue becomes inflamed or irritated, often due to excessive stress or strain.

Think of it this way: if you have a tight muscle in your neck causing headaches, would simply buying a new pillow solve the underlying issue? Probably not. Similarly, while supportive shoes might offer temporary comfort, they don’t address the root causes of plantar fasciitis, which can include:

  • Biomechanical Issues: Problems with your gait (how you walk or run), foot structure (like flat feet or high arches), or even imbalances in your hips or legs can contribute to excessive stress on the plantar fascia. Shoes don’t correct these underlying mechanics.
  • Muscle Imbalances and Weakness: Weak calf muscles, tight Achilles tendons, or insufficient intrinsic foot muscle strength can all place extra strain on the plantar fascia. Shoes can’t magically strengthen these muscles.
  • Overuse and Training Errors: Sudden increases in activity level, improper training techniques, or prolonged periods of standing can overload the plantar fascia. While shoes might offer some cushioning during these activities, they don’t change the training load or correct improper form.
  • Lack of Flexibility: Limited ankle dorsiflexion (the ability to bend your foot upwards) can restrict movement and increase stress on the plantar fascia. Shoes won’t improve your ankle mobility.

At PRO Therapy Physical Therapy, our Doctors of Physical Therapy take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to treating plantar fasciitis. We understand that it’s not just a foot problem, but often a symptom of a larger musculoskeletal issue. Here’s how our skilled therapists in NE Minneapolis and Coon Rapids can provide effective and lasting relief:

  1. Thorough Assessment: Our Doctors of Physical Therapy will conduct a detailed evaluation, including a review of your medical history, a physical examination of your foot and ankle, and an assessment of your gait, posture, and flexibility. This helps us identify the specific factors contributing to your plantar fasciitis.
  2. Personalized Treatment Plans: Based on our assessment, we will develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and goals. This may include:
    • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to address soft tissue restrictions, improve joint mobility, and reduce pain in the foot, ankle, and surrounding areas.
    • Therapeutic Exercises: Specific stretches and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility, build muscle strength in the foot and lower leg, and correct muscle imbalances.
    • Gait Analysis and Correction: We’ll analyze your walking or running pattern and provide guidance and exercises to improve your biomechanics and reduce stress on the plantar fascia.
    • Education and Self-Management Strategies: We’ll empower you with the knowledge and tools you need to manage your condition long-term, including proper stretching techniques, activity modification strategies, and guidance on appropriate footwear for different activities (not just relying on new shoes as the sole solution).
    • Custom Foot-Orthotics:Β We have a full selection of custom foot orthotics for you, so you don’t need to worry about your feet going forward.
  3. Addressing the Root Cause: Unlike simply masking the symptoms with supportive footwear, our physical therapy interventions target the underlying biomechanical issues, muscle imbalances, and movement dysfunctions that are contributing to your plantar fasciitis.

Don’t let heel pain limit your life any longer. If you’re in the NE Minneapolis or Coon Rapids area and struggling with plantar fasciitis, the experienced Doctors of Physical Therapy at PRO Therapy Physical Therapy are here to help. We’ll work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that goes beyond just recommending new shoes, addressing the true cause of your pain and getting you back to the activities you love.

Grace helped me strengthen my core to the point where my back feels so much better. She gave me excercises that I can do at home that don't require gym equipment.

Since my treatment, pain and mobility have greatly improved. Very appreciative of all the help.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%

I found PRO Therapy shortly after tearing my ACL at the beginning of the year. From the Pre-Op PT, to now 7 months post op and 50+ appointments, I could not be happier with where Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Lily have gotten me back to. I highly recommend PRO to anyone looking for PT in the Twin Cities!

I self referred myself to PRO Therapy because of the 5 star rating and I'm so glad I did!

Dr. Kelvyn and Jen were so easy to work. Everyone I saw at the office was very nice too. I worked on my hips and shoulders this year and feel confident I can continue making progress post "graduation" because of the knowledge and exercises that Dr. Kelvyn shared with me!

Overall, I would highly recommend. Thank you PRO Therapy for a great experience πŸ™‚
