That Heavy Feeling: Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Finding Support in the Twin Cities

For many women, it starts with a subtle sensation. Maybe it is a feeling of “heaviness” in the pelvis after a long walk, a nagging lower back ache that won’t quit, or the startling discovery of a bulge while showering.

The medical term is Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP), but for the women experiencing it in Northeast Minneapolis and Coon Rapids, the feeling is often one of fear and isolation. You might worry that your running days are over, or that surgery is your only option.

At PRO Therapy, we want you to know two things immediately: You are not alone, and you have options.

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Your pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, and rectum) are supported by a hammock of muscles (the pelvic floor) and connective tissue. When this support system weakens or becomes stretched—often due to pregnancy, childbirth, chronic constipation, or heavy lifting—one or more of these organs can descend into the vaginal canal.

It is incredibly common. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, pelvic support problems affect millions of women, yet many suffer in silence due to embarrassment.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • A sensation of heaviness or dragging in the vagina.

  • Seeing or feeling a “bulge” or “ball” at the vaginal opening.

  • Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowels completely.

  • Lower back pain that eases when you lie down.

  • Discomfort during intercourse.

The “Surgery is Inevitable” Myth

When women first Google their symptoms, they are often bombarded with information about surgical mesh and reconstruction. This can be terrifying.

While surgery is necessary in severe cases, it is rarely the first step. For mild to moderate prolapse, conservative management is highly effective. In fact, understanding the different types of prolapse can help you realize that symptom management—not just surgical repair—is a viable and successful path.

How PRO Therapy Supports Your Recovery

At PRO Therapy, our approach to Pelvic Health Physical Therapy is about restoring balance. We don’t just treat the bulge; we treat the pressure system that caused it.

1. Pressure Management Strategy Prolapse is often a pressure problem. If you hold your breath and bear down when you lift a laundry basket or a barbell, you are pushing your organs downward. We teach you how to coordinate your breath with your core to lift your organs up and in during activity.

2. Strengthening the Support System We work on strengthening the pelvic floor muscles so they can provide a stiffer, more supportive “shelf” for your organs to rest on. This often significantly reduces that feeling of heaviness.

3. Lifestyle Modifications Small changes make a big difference. We help you address chronic constipation (which strains the pelvic floor) and modify your exercise routine so you can stay active without worsening your symptoms.

You Can Still Live an Active Life

A diagnosis of prolapse does not mean you have to stop lifting weights, running, or playing with your kids. It simply means you need a new strategy. We have helped countless women in the Twin Cities return to the activities they love—symptom-free.

If you have more questions about what is happening in your body, be sure to check our guide on common questions about pelvic health to learn more about the connection between symptoms and pelvic dysfunction.

Don’t Let Gravity Win

If you are feeling that “heavy” sensation, don’t wait for it to go away on its own. The sooner you address prolapse, the better the outcomes.

If you are unsure if physical therapy can help your specific situation, we invite you to apply for a Free Discovery Visit at our Northeast Minneapolis or Coon Rapids clinics. Let’s talk about your goals and get you back to feeling supported—in every sense of the word.

My experience with Grace was wonderful. I saw her for pelvic floor therapy and some general physical therapy and hip mobility. She listened very well to my concerns, was very educational and helped me understand why I was doing the exercises I was doing. I would highly recommend Grace and Pro Therapy.

Grace helped me strengthen my core to the point where my back feels so much better. She gave me excercises that I can do at home that don't require gym equipment.

Since my treatment, pain and mobility have greatly improved. Very appreciative of all the help.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.

Excellent place with great people. Go to this place.
Dr. Lily met me where I was (post a major surgery and really weak - like barely able to stand/walk) with respect and accommodation. I was always challenged but at a safe pace. It took me a few months to see it, but they were working on the long game all the time and it paid off. I'm really happy with my recovery.

*p.s. - Don't be intimidated by the super hulk weight machines. I kinda was but almost nobody uses those. They utilize all sorts of un-intimidating equipment. Also, the location seems odd at first but it turns out to be very convenient.

I'll go back if I ever need more PT. 100%

I found PRO Therapy shortly after tearing my ACL at the beginning of the year. From the Pre-Op PT, to now 7 months post op and 50+ appointments, I could not be happier with where Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Lily have gotten me back to. I highly recommend PRO to anyone looking for PT in the Twin Cities!

I self referred myself to PRO Therapy because of the 5 star rating and I'm so glad I did!

Dr. Kelvyn and Jen were so easy to work. Everyone I saw at the office was very nice too. I worked on my hips and shoulders this year and feel confident I can continue making progress post "graduation" because of the knowledge and exercises that Dr. Kelvyn shared with me!

Overall, I would highly recommend. Thank you PRO Therapy for a great experience 🙂
