Stay Active, Stay Injury-Free: Your Guide to Long-Term Wellness

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the urge to get out and enjoy the beautiful Minneapolis weather is undeniable. For many, that means getting back into the swing of outdoor activities – whether it’s sprucing up the garden, meticulously mowing the lawn, or spending hours cheering on your kids at their sporting events.

While these activities bring joy and a sense of normalcy, they can also, unfortunately, lead to unexpected aches, pains, or even injuries if we’re not mindful. At PRO Therapy, our goal isn’t just to get you out of pain; it’s to equip you with the knowledge and tools to stay active and injury-free for the long haul. That’s the true power of prevention!

Let’s look at a common scenario we often see:

An elderly woman bending over flowersThe Gardening Enthusiast’s Common Pitfall: Mary’s Story

Mary, a vibrant 62-year-old from South Minneapolis, recently came to PRO Therapy after experiencing persistent lower back pain. Her story began with a renewed passion for her backyard garden. With the warmer weather, she spent an entire Saturday afternoon bent over, weeding, planting, and potting. By Sunday morning, her lower back was screaming in protest, making simple movements feel excruciating.

Mary had previously completed physical therapy with us a few months prior for a shoulder issue, and she knew about the proactive approach PRO Therapy takes. She was frustrated, thinking she’d set herself back.

Her PRO Therapy Treatment & Prevention Plan:

Upon assessment our physical therapist identified that while Mary’s lower back was inflamed, the root cause wasn’t a severe injury, but rather a combination of prolonged, unsupported bending and a lack of core engagement during her gardening marathon.

Her personalized therapy at PRO Therapy focused on:

  1. Acute Pain Management: Gentle manual therapy to reduce muscle spasms and inflammation in her lower back.
  2. Core Strengthening & Education: Teaching Mary how to properly engage her deep core muscles to support her spine during activities like bending and lifting.
  3. Ergonomic Gardening Techniques: The therapist didn’t tell Mary to stop gardening! Instead, he showed her how to modify her approach:
    • Using a gardening stool or kneepads: To reduce prolonged bending and squatting.
    • Taking frequent breaks: Every 15-20 minutes, stand up, gently stretch, and walk around.
    • Alternating tasks: Instead of continuous weeding, switch to potting, then pruning, then back to weeding.
    • “Hinging at the hips” vs. bending at the waist: Demonstrating the proper biomechanics for lifting and bending, keeping her back straight.
    • Using longer-handled tools: To minimize bending.
  4. Pre-Activity Warm-up: Simple stretches Mary could do for 5 minutes before heading into the garden to prepare her muscles.
  5. Post-Activity Cool-down: Gentle stretches to perform after she finished to release tension.

Mary quickly found relief, but more importantly, she left PRO Therapy with a newfound understanding of how to manage her gardening passion without pain. She now incorporates short breaks, uses her gardening stool religiously, and practices the core engagement techniques our therapist taught her. She’s back to enjoying her garden, feeling empowered to stay active and injury-free.

Your Path to Long-Term Wellness

Mary’s story isn’t unique. Whether it’s the repetitive motion of mowing, the static posture of sitting on bleachers all day, or the twists and turns of gardening, everyday activities can strain our bodies if we’re not prepared.

At PRO Therapy, our commitment to your long-term wellness means we don’t just treat your symptoms. We delve into why an injury occurred and provide you with the education and strategies to prevent its recurrence. We empower you to understand your body, adapt your activities, and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

My experience at Pro Therapy was phenomenal! Grace listened to my issues and I felt like she really cared that I get relief from my bursitis in my right hip. By targeting the area of concern with very specific exercises and doing a few dry needling sessions, she significantly reduced my hip pain in only 6 weeks! I will definitely be recommending Pro Therapy to anyone I know that needs any kind of physical therapy! Thank you!!

I had a great experience at PRO therapy. It’s a great mix of body work and exercise. It isn’t “a printout of your exercises and come back in two weeks” place. You do all the exercises in the gym with them each session so you know the correct form and how to do them on your own. I have really improved in my strength and my day to day pain has significantly reduced over my time there. My main PT was Dr. Kelvyn and he was great to work with. Very supportive and encouraging. He met me where I was at and didn’t make me feel bad if I couldn’t complete something. If I wanted to be seen but couldn’t get onto his schedule, I saw one of the other PTs and they were all equally great. It was seamless to work with someone else for the day. Jen and the other front desk staff were always very friendly and very helpful. I would highly recommend getting your physical therapy done here.

I worked with Dr. Kelvyn here for over a year and a half on multiple lower body injuries (ankle, knee, hip, lower back). He is the best physical therapist I’ve ever worked with, and unfortunately I’ve had the misfortune of working with a lot of PTs in my lifetime. I appreciated that he really listened to what I was coming in and describing feeling to him each session, and then he tailored the exercises we did together and the exercises he prescribed to do at home based on what I reported at the beginning of our session. He also did a good job of adjusting my at home exercises to my needs and preferences. Can’t recommend Dr. Kelvyn or PRO Therapy enough!

My experience with Grace was wonderful. I saw her for pelvic floor therapy and some general physical therapy and hip mobility. She listened very well to my concerns, was very educational and helped me understand why I was doing the exercises I was doing. I would highly recommend Grace and Pro Therapy.

Grace helped me strengthen my core to the point where my back feels so much better. She gave me excercises that I can do at home that don't require gym equipment.

I had two different doctors working with me and both were very good. They listen, have you try different moves, and are able to proceed to plan.
