What Is The Graston Technique?

by | Jul 27, 2023 | News

Therapist using graston technique

The Graston Technique is a popular treatment option in physical therapy, chiropractic, athletic training and massage therapy. This unique therapy option is widely used – and for good reason.

But what is it exactly? What are the benefits, and how does it work? We’ll explore these questions in today’s blog.

What Is the Graston Technique?

The Graston Technique is a form of massage and manual therapy that uses special, stainless steel tools to mobilize soft tissue. Similar to other forms of massage, the experience is often relaxing for the patient while providing a number of pain-fighting benefits. Another way to think of the Graston Technique is like deep-tissue massage using tools instead of hands.

Our Doctors of Physical Therapy are all educated and trained on when and how to use the Graston Technique for our patients to have the best outcomes within their sessions. We may leverage this technique amongst others when managing a full plan of care.

What Can the Graston Technique Help With?

The Graston Technique is a treatment option used to find knots, scar tissue or other restrictions in your muscle. The process of the technique introduces inflammation and increased blood flow to the area, which helps with the healing process.

The most common experience from this technique is an immediate reduction in pain. Over several treatments, patients often experience improved mobility and long-term pain reduction in the affected area.

How is the Graston Technique Used in Physical Therapy?

The Graston Technique is just one of many treatment options that a Doctor of Physical Therapy can use to help a patient eliminate pain once and for all. At PRO Therapy, we use the Graston Technique alongside other treatment options to help the body heal. This technique is so popular because it’s so often beneficial and with very limited exclusions – even for patients who easily bruise or otherwise need a gentler hand, the technique can be modified to apply less pressure.

No solution is one-size-fits-all, so the best way to know if the Graston Technique will be effective for any pain you’re experiencing is to speak directly with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. They’ll be able to offer recommendations based on your specific body, activity level and desired end results.

Are you ready to make physical therapy work for you? Give us a call! We offer complimentary phone and in-person consultations. We aim to meet our patients wherever they are in their journey and answer all questions we can to ensure a smooth experience at PRO Therapy. We want to help you make the best decision for you!

I had the pleasure of working with Dr Kalvin,I had tendinitis in my knee and hamstring, after 6wks of P.T my pain level went from a 10 down to a 1. He was absolutely amazing, very informative and patient with me. Thank you so much for taking care of me 💖

Went in for help with my knee as it usually gets tight when I run. We went through a few sessions and honed in on what the problem potentially is. Dr. Kelvyn pointed a few things out that I wouldn't have figured out myself. Since the problem is probably form and/or muscle related it won't be an overnight fix. I get a set of exercises to do each visit that address my areas of weakness. It was good working with Dr. Kelvyn and definitely recommend checking out PRO Therapy

Excellent Care! Personally Customized Therapy. Over the course of several months I had the privilege of receiving physical therapy from Dr. Lily Anderson, that was tailored to me and my specific ailments. Beyond the arch of progress through the treatment plan, each appointment was customized to my needs and ability of the day. She was able to help me have reduced pain, increased mobility and strength in all my areas of need. This amount of detailed attention was astounding. I felt truly cared for, and am filled with gratitude. Thank you Lily!

The best choice I made!.. I had initially gone to a different physical therapist connected with Mhealth after 2 visits I was unhappy with the service I received, decided to check out Pro-therapy.Pro-Therapy was exactly what I needed. I mainly worked with Dr.Ben, who was amazing at focusing on the problem, personalizing a therapy program. A program to achieve goals that were important to me. I would highly recommend Pro-Therapy!
