Does Physical Therapy Help with Ankle Pain?

by | Jul 17, 2023 | Ankle Pain

A Person Touching His Ankle

If you’re experiencing ankle pain, you’ve likely tried anything you can get your hands on – ice, heat, resting, pain meds…and you’ve likely experienced your pain eventually coming back no matter what you do. This is an extremely common experience, and luckily it’s one that you can resolve to get rid of ankle pain.

The best way to eliminate that pain once and for all is to get to the source – which is where physical therapy with PRO Therapy comes in! Physical therapy is a common treatment option for muscular pain, but does it help with ankle pain as well? And if so, how?

Does Physical Therapy Help with Ankle Pain?

Yes! Physical therapy is an extremely effective treatment option for ankle pain.

It’s common for people to think that their ankle and foot pain was caused by doing something – like walking more than usual or wearing a new pair of shoes. But in reality, it’s more likely caused from years of not having proper support for your ankle and foot, possibly having uneven alignment in your legs or some other factor(s). Pain from additional walking or wearing new shoes was just the EFFECT. Physical therapy looks for the CAUSE.

Because physical therapy searches for the root cause of all your ankle pain, your treatments will be directed at solving this root cause and not just addressing symptoms. This means more effective pain management and elimination long-term.

How Can Physical Therapy Ease Or Get Rid Of Your Ankle Pain?

There are a few key ways physical therapy helps with ankle pain.

  • Take away the immediate pain and stiffness – usually in a couple of sessions.
  • Figure out what’s really going on, and get to the root cause of your ankle or foot pain.
  • Target the specific problem with exercises and treatments catered to you and your issue to help speed up recovery.
  • Put an end to the need for countless pain killers, which can be addictive and are no good for your health in the long term.
  • Avoid dangerous ankle or foot surgery.
  • Walk and move without a limp when you get out of bed in the morning, after getting up from sitting, etc.
  • Get you back to doing the activities you love – whether it’s light activity or high-impact exercise.
  • Find the right shoes for every purpose, to support your body and avoid future pain.

Because each case is different, it’s hard to know exactly what treatment options will be best for your ankle pain. That’s why you should meet with a doctor of physical therapy in person so they can examine your ankle and speak to you about your symptoms.

Dr. Kelvyn and Dr. Kevin are wonderful pros, and again, Doctors. They treated both my husband and I for back pain. The dry needling technique was new to us both and helped us. The exercises were very helpful, and we continue to use them. My husband really thought the Graston technique and the taping helped him a lot. I appreciated their friendly manner and their experience. They listened carefully to us and treated us accordingly. Very professional office. I recommend them.

Strongly recommend pro therapy for physical therapy! I saw Dr. Kelvyn for a running injury and he was fantastic! He listened to my concerns and modified the treatment plan as I progressed. Also enjoyed the dry needling during the sessions. The whole staff at pro therapy were amazing and I enjoyed my experience there! Thanks for the amazing help!

I have gone to many physical therapists over the years and PRO Therapy has been one of the best. I have been here for two separate injuries. They have been able to pinpoint where my symptoms are coming from quickly, explain the issue throughly, and create an effective plan of action. My pain has decreased since coming here! It is a nice, friendly environment, with good conversation.

Went in for help with my knee as it usually gets tight when I run. We went through a few sessions and honed in on what the problem potentially is. Dr. Kelvyn pointed a few things out that I wouldn't have figured out myself. Since the problem is probably form and/or muscle related it won't be an overnight fix. I get a set of exercises to do each visit that address my areas of weakness. It was good working with Dr. Kelvyn and definitely recommend checking out PRO Therapy

Excellent Care! Personally Customized Therapy. Over the course of several months I had the privilege of receiving physical therapy from Dr. Lily Anderson, that was tailored to me and my specific ailments. Beyond the arch of progress through the treatment plan, each appointment was customized to my needs and ability of the day. She was able to help me have reduced pain, increased mobility and strength in all my areas of need. This amount of detailed attention was astounding. I felt truly cared for, and am filled with gratitude. Thank you Lily!
