Believe it or not, 2023 is right around the corner! There is no better time than now to take advantage of any unused insurance benefits.
It is to your financial benefit to use any available benefits yet this year to complete any outstanding treatment, preventive or maintenance physical therapy sessions for you and your family. Don’t give up extra benefits just because you are busy or have forgotten about these perks.
Now is exactly the time to review what you are still entitled to.
What to Know About End of the Year Insurance Benefits
Almost all insurance plans reset on a calendar year. Any applied deductible amounts, out of pocket max, or visit allowances and even unused FSA plans dollar amounts do not rollover to the next benefit year. What does this mean? If you don’t use it, you lose it!
Before the year is up, ask yourself these questions:
- Have you reviewed your insurance plan and coverage lately?
- Did you already spend most or all this year’s deductible?
- Are you in pain? Can physical therapy help?
- Do you want to save money on your physical therapy costs and out-of-pocket expenses?
- Want to start the new year pain-free and have insurance cover all or most of your costs?
If you have a family plan, had any major surgeries, or have any chronic conditions, you are especially likely to have a $0 balance remaining on your out-of-pocket expense from this year. This means that starting in the fall, the cost of physical therapy could be minimal or completely covered by insurance!

Here’s a quick snapshot of what to watch for:
Insurance Deductible – The required amount of money paid for health services before your medical insurance starts contributing full or partial amounts for your health services. If you already paid your deductible, it’s a great time to get your visits scheduled before your deductible restarts again next year.
Co-Pay – The amount of money your insurance company requires you to pay per visit, this is a fixed rate. At the end of the year, your co-pay rate may increase. You should plan to be seen before the end of the year to prevent added costs due to any potential increased rates.
Co-Insurance – A percentage of the amount of money the health insurance company will contribute toward your physical therapy sessions. For example, if your insurance plan has a coinsurance of 80%/20%, meaning they will cover 80% of your cost for therapy leaving you with a 20% financial responsibility.
Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Contributions – Did you know you can use your FSA dollars for physical therapy appointments? If you don’t use all your FSA by the end of the year, you’ll lose the dollars. If you have a Health Spending Account (HSA), now is the time to schedule treatment so your co-payment amounts can be applied to this year’s deductions.
Any Changes in Coverage / Establishing a New Plan – If you’re planning on having any changes to your insurance plan heading into the new year, there could be coverage changes, fee increases or reduction in services.
That makes now the perfect time to invest in your health with a visit to PRO Therapy. If you are struggling with pain, lack of mobility, or are nursing an injury that just will not heal, we want to help get to the root of the problem and get you on the road to recovery.

Why You Should Start Physical Therapy in the Fall
It is important to look at this information now because it is very rare that physical therapy is a “one and done” session. If you’ve been having months, or even years of pain, a full plan of care (or multiple visits) may be necessary to ensure improvements are solidified. This plan of care may last up to two to three months, meaning if you are attempting to maximize your utilization of insurance benefits, there’s no better time to start than now.
Sometimes, people wait for major injuries or surgeries to start physical therapy. But physical therapy can be most helpful if you have problems with pain, stiffness, motor skills, coordination, balance, or strength. In most cases, these are problems we tend to put off managing, because we might not see them as severe enough.
Unfortunately, they can lead to longer, more complicated issues in the future.
If you’ve been in pain or recently experienced an injury, don’t delay any longer – you can use your insurance benefits to maximum benefit.
